Maremma: Tuscany’s wild coast

Hiking program with guide – 6 days, 7 nights

The beautiful Tuscan coast: walks through the wonderful Mediterranean nature, ancient cultures, medieval villages, breathtaking landscapes, fine wines, local delicacies. And there is always the sea: sometimes the hike takes you along sandy beaches, sometimes above picturesque cliffs with clear water! As always, knowing that most of our guests are “foodies”, we have given special attention to the accommodation which is in a beautiful boutique hotel directly by the sea with a Gourmet restaurant famous for its seafood specialties.

Benvenuti in Maremma!

1st day: individual arrival to the Hotel. Meeting with your guide for a welcome aperitif where you will meet also with the rest of the group. Afterwards dinner in the seafood restaurant.

2nd day: This first hike leads to the Natural Park of Maremma, a protected area known for its flora and fauna and its different landscape types. It is especially attractive, of course, for its location directly by the Mediterranean Sea, which offers beautiful panoramas during the hikes and the opportunity for a swim on the long sandy beach during the lunch break. In the afternoon we visit an organic winery. A sympathetic swiss oenologist will show you the vineyards and the cellar and guide you through the tasting. Hike on this day: approx. 3,5 hours walking time, 14 km, ↑ ↓ 150 m

Etruscan pathways

3rd day: After a drive through picturesque hilly landscapes we reach the ancient Etruscan village of Sovana, where our hike starts. It takes us through one of the famous Etruscans ways that have been cut deeply into tuff stone. During the hike you will learn interesting things about the Etruscans. The hike ends in Pitigliano, a medieval town built on tuff stone, with a very eventful history. Here you have time for a lunch break and to explore the narrow streets of the town on your own. On the way back visit of a wonderful Organic winery, which, since 1994, produces wines from autochthonous grapes, that are very expressive and authentic for this territory. Hike on this day: approx. 2.5 hours walking time, 9 km, ↑ 170 m ↓ 190 m

Populonia & Super Tuscans

4th day: The day begins with a visit to the ancient Etruscan settlement of Populonia from where a hike leads to the picturesque bay Buca delle Fate, a place that invites for a rest and a picnic lunch. If the weather allows it is also a wonderful place to have a swim (bathing shoes recommended because of the sharp stones). The way then leads steeply above the sea with scenic views. In the afternoon we visit a winery near Suvereto. The barren soil and the low fertility rate, many hours of sunlight and a special microclimate make this an ideal place for the production of full-bodied, rich wines. The grape varieties include Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Alicante Bouchet, Vermentino and Pinot bianco. After the visit, you will be offered a tasting. Hike on this day: approx. 3 hours walking time, 8 km, ↑ ↓ 270 m

Dolce far niente!

5th day: A day off to relax at the hotel by the sea or to explore the surrounding areas, for example, visit to the famous Tarot Garden in Capalbio. In order to give you a greater flexibility, we did not plan dinner on this day. Our tour guide will give you some tips!

6th day: The journey starts early in the morning by ferry boat. Enjoy an hour boat trip on the Tuscan sea before you land in the port of Giglio with its colorful facades. From here a public bus takes you up to the main town of the island and one of its highest places, Giglio Castello – the castle. Your hike begins here and leads you through the typical landscape, famous for its variety of plants and great views over the sea. You’ll meet an ancient mill and have the possibility for a swim in a beautiful beach. On the way back you will meet winemaker Giovanni of a local winery in his vineyards. Taste the traditional wines, a special experience! Then, walk through the romantic mule tracks back to the harbor. The ferry takes you back in the late afternoon. Hike on this day: approx. 3,5 hours walking time, 9 km, ↑ 50 m ↓ 400 m

The Cala Violina & a German winemaker

7th day: Today’s hike takes you to a section of pristine Mediterranean coast. Passing through flowering Mediterranean scrub we walk towards a beautiful, crescent-shaped bay, accessible only by foot. From the sandy beach you can see the island of Elba and the famous island Montecristo. In the afternoon visit to a winery at the foot of the hill Vetulonia, where the former Etruscan city VETLUNA is located. This winemaker’s family is considered one of the pioneers of modern Maremma wine. Because it is already 30 years ago, when the wine importer Harald L. Bremer from Braunschweig pressed the first Vetluna at his new winery, and it became immediately to a talking point. Exciting tour and tasting.
Hike on this day: approx. 3 hours walking time, 9 km, ↑ ↓ 200 m
