The Cinque Terre, five little villages on the Ligurian Riviera near La Spezia. With their pastel-coloured houses, the balconies overlooking the sea and the small "carugi" (dialect for narrow streets) the villages seem to be swallow nests hanging in the cliffs between sea and sky. In 1999 the Cinque Terre have been added to the UNESCO list of world heritage sites and became a Nationalpark and marine reserve. The area is one of the most spectacular hiking locations in Italy.

 

Because only by foot one can experience the true soul of this area, hiking the footpaths through olive tree fields and terraced vineyards surrounded by the intense flavours of the Mediterranean macchia and overlooking the sea. Thus the wanderer will understand better the efforts of the winegrowers who cultivate their vineyards in the same manner since more than 1000 years... In springtime the Cinque Terre are spectacular with their flowerage: the yellow flowering broom, the deep red poppies, the white rockroses - everything offers charming scents and intense colours. In autumn the Cinque Terre are flavoured by the herbs and ripe grapes. With luck you will experience the grape harvest: the women cutting the grapes and the men carrying the heavy baskets on the shoulders taking them to their cellars in the villages - the same movements as thousand years ago.
